Alnwick Branch in a cape

Reading Bartle Rippon's splendid new account of The Alnwick Branch I was reminded of a walk some of us took along the line shortly after the track had been lifted. I also travelled on the very last train (on 28 January 1968) but remember it slightly differently from Rippon in that he describes it as having two cars whereas I recall it was made up of two two-car units: the last through set from Newcastle and the branch set. Both were full. I remember we sang the Monkees' Last train to Clarksville as an elegy (it's actually about the Vietnam war, but may not be a 'protest' song). There's also a wild Serbian cover version - Zadnji voz za Čačak by Riblja čorba or Fish Soup). It was a pity no one at BR thought of running the train on in service to Newcastle rather than as empty stock.
