Tom Gutteridge

Tom has recently posted a nice photo of himself and his new family on his blog. I think it is meant to celebrate the completion of some diet he has been on. I have to say he is looking pretty good and not that much different from how he was at school 40 years ago. Except I do not remember him ever wearing denim - he was more of a tweed and flannels man at 18, but then we all were then. In those days Tom was a keen Evangelical Christian (although one given to high church practices) whose 'testimony' included a minor miracle with a moving crucifix. Oddly I remember him also saying he would like to have been a Jew, "because you cannot become one'". I suppose his lovely little daughter is at least jew-ish through her mother. Congratulations, Tom, on all counts.

  1. Thanks for the congratulations: third time appears to be lucky for me. Your memory is clearly rather better than mine: I'm impressed (perhaps you should be writing my blog for me). I think you could be right about my teenage interest in Judaism - I even learnt a smidgeon of Hebrew once (for about a week, from a Teach Yourself book). I wonder what happened to that crucifix? It belonged to my father, who was a very lapsed Catholic.

Thank you also for an enjoyable and nostalgic blog, and for your earlier comments about Chris Dowell (following my "When Did You Cry Last" post). Does anyone know what became of his sister Liz? Her (16 year old) best friend Norma lived with, married and divorced a much older man - my half-brother Keith. But that's a blog post for another day.

  2. I think Elizabeth became a solicitor in Hull or maybe she went to university there or both. I remember Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band thought she was very pretty. Maybe Norma might know if you are still in touch. Norma, I think, had a natty naval blazer or perhaps it was just her Dame Allan's uniform.
